The West and Central Africa Regional Youth Consultation on Enhancing Young People’s Meaningful Participation in Electoral Processes ended in Abuja on Thursday 14 September 2017 in grand style with the endorsement of the NotTooYoungToRun Campaign by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Consultation which is one of the three Regional Youth Consultations that are being convened as part of the African Union theme of 2017: Harnessing Demographic Dividends through Investment in Youth, brought together young leaders, networks and organisation from both West and Central African countries. Over 100 participants attended the consultation.

The Consultation was intended to provide a collaborative, open and inclusive space for young people to critically and objectively reflect on progress made so far, challenges encountered and prospects for enhancing meaningful youth participation in the electoral processes of West and Central African countries.

As part of the activities of the consultation, ECOWAS endorsed the NotTooYoungToRun Campaign as a comparable lesson on how young people can pull together to tackle barriers to their meaningful participation in their various countries. In her statement, Commissioner Ahmed endorsed the Campaign and pledged the support of ECOWAS to the reduction of age limits for candidates running for elective offices.

She also urged electoral management bodies (EMBs) and parliaments in the ECOWAS Member States to create the necessary enabling legal environment to allow young people contesting for political offices. According to Mrs Ahmed, “at ECOWAS, we support initiatives like #NotTooYoungToRun aimed at reducing age limits for candidates running for elective office. We see #NotTooYoungToRun Campaign as a critical advancement of the principles of ECOWAS Protocol & we support it”.
